12:30-1:30 PM – Jewish Books in Christian Bibles with Dr. Ely Levine
In-person and Zoom

Ancient Jewish literature was quite varied. What Jews decided to preserve was just a small portion; Christians preserved many, many Jewish texts. Come read through some of these Jewish texts, including the Gospels, Jubilees, and Maccabees. See what other ideas Jews had that may not have been preserved in mainstream Judaism, other ideas that seemed to find a roundabout way into normative Judaism, and still other Jewish ideas that ended up being used against Jews.

February 8, 6:30-8 PM – Jewish Influence in the Music of Bob Dylan with Cantor Randy Herman

“May God bless and keep you always…” Dylan sings in his song Forever Young, echoing the Jewish priestly blessing. How much if at all did Jewishness influence the music of Dylan and other major figures of the 60’s folk revival?  I have some thoughts and theories; we will take a look, and a listen – and of course do a little singing.

March 7, 6:30-8 PM – Jazziness in Judaism with Cantor Randy Herman

Legendary avant-garde jazz sax player Ornette Coleman, a non-Jewish African American, referred to the traditional cantorial music of Yossele Rosenblatt (1882-1933) as essential music listening.  Swing legend Benny Goodman breaks into a hora in a live version of one of his classic tunes.  Cab Calloway sings a song in Yiddish and breaks into cantorial-style skat singing.  Why do these things happen, and what do they mean? You’re asking me?? I don’t know – let’s explore!
